Among the fortified churches founded in the 15th century, the one that most impresses the viewer by the thickness of its surrounding walls and the height of its defence towers is the Church of Prejmer near the city of Bra║ov. The 12-meter-tall walls of the Church of Prejmer are rectangular in shape. They are surrounded by moats and have four defence towers. The drawbridges and iron gates controlled access to the inside. A device called ôthe organ of deathö was placed on the battlements; it was made up of a number of bows placed together with a view to concentrating fire power.
The buildings inside the citadel are adjoined to the walls of the enclosing and have three or four levels. They have a total of 272 rooms, all connected by stairs; many of these were used as storing places for supplies during a siege. A small ethnographic museum occupies now one of these rooms. An underground passage made its possible for those in the besieged fortress to communicate with those outside. The Gothic church was erected in the middle of the citadel and has the shape of a Greek cross. The church organ dates to the 16th century. The iconostasis painted on both sides between 1450 and 1460 is quite uncommon.
